New DOC walking track between Taylors Mistake & Godley Head
DOC is well underway on an upgraded walking track between Taylors Mistake & Godley Head. Completion date is unclear following the recent heavy rains, but October – November 2012 appears to be the target. As at 26 Aug 2012, the new track has been formed from Godley Head to just above Boulder Bay. This section still needs smoothing and shingling. Work on the whole track is due to restart within the week ie as soon as the saturated hillsides dry sufficiently.
While this track is not part of the Christchurch Coastal Pathway it will be another walking / running track in the area, approximately 60 minutes walk from the Sumner end of the Christchurch Coastal Pathway. This new track will have stunning coastal views from the hillsides.
This is good news in that the current track is very rough and has been closed for many months post-quake. The new track will be 1.2m wide, and should avoid many of the current inconsistencies of track surface and gradients. Arguably it is not-so-good news in that the new track is designed for pedestrian traffic only.
A map of the proposed track is available here.
